More Than Four-in-Ten U.S. Adults Likely to Consider Haggling As a Tactic to Save Money On Holiday Shopping, Finds New CouponCabin Survey

WHITING, Ind., October 24, 2012 – Amidst America’s frugality-obsessed culture, consumers plan to find unique ways to save money this upcoming holiday season. A new CouponCabin.com survey finds that more than four-in-ten (43 percent) U.S. adults are at least somewhat likely to consider haggling as a tactic to save money on holiday shopping this year. An additional 7 percent said it is very likely they will haggle. This survey was conducted online nationwide by Harris Interactive on behalf of CouponCabin.com from September 21st – 25th, 2012, among 2,319 U.S. adults aged 18 and older.
Of the 50 percent of U.S. adults who said they aren’t likely to haggle to save on holiday shopping this year, a variety of reasons are cited, including:
• The sales staff doesn’t have the power to change prices – 51 percent
• I don’t think it would work – 38 percent
• I don’t think it’s appropriate – 38 percent
• Store prices are set for a reason – 31 percent
• I’m too embarrassed to haggle – 23 percent
• I don’t want to appear cheap – 10 percent
• Other – 8 percent
Haggling isn’t a saving tactic just practiced at the holidays. Nearly seven-in-ten (69 percent) U.S. adults said they have haggled in the past. More than one-quarter (26 percent) do it sometimes, with 6 percent saying they do it often. Thirty-one percent of U.S. adults report they never haggle.
“Sometimes shoppers have to get creative to come up with new and unique ways to save money,” said Jackie Warrick, President and Chief Savings Officer at CouponCabin.com. “With the big holiday spending season imminent, now is a good time for consumers to plan their holiday shopping strategy and shop at a variety of different places to get the best overall deals.”
Haggling isn’t the only unique shopping strategy out there. When asked which discount establishments they would consider shopping at to save money on holiday items this year, U.S. adults said the following:
• Mass market discount stores (e.g., TJ Maxx, Marshall’s) – 63 percent
• Dollar stores – 51 percent
• Online auction sites (e.g., Ebay) – 35 percent
• Charity shops (e.g., Goodwill, Salvation Army) – 27 percent
• Consignment/resale shops (i.e., a shop where previously sold items are re-sold) – 26 percent
• Garage sales – 25 percent
• Pawn shops – 15 percent
• Other – 14 percent
Warrick offers the following tips for employing unique holiday saving strategies this shopping season:
• Mix up where you shop: Do you typically shop at big box stores or chains? If you want to give haggling a shot, consider checking out smaller, independent businesses too as you’ll likely have a better chance of negotiating prices.
