U.S. Adults Reveal Which Famous Scary Movie Characters Best Represent Their Financial Situations in New CouponCabin.com Survey

WHITING, Ind., October 26, 2011 – Costume prepping, candy buying and pumpkin carving are in full swing, and for many people, queuing up their favorite scary movie will also be on their Halloween checklist. Some of those horror movies may be more to true to life than expected, though, as a new CouponCabin.com survey reveals how famous scary movie villains represent U.S. adults’ financial situations.
When asked which famous scary movie characters best described their current financial states, U.S. adults said:
- Michael Myers from “Halloween” – I’m superhuman; no matter what circumstances arise, I find a way to make ends meet – 32 percent
- Ghostface from “Scream” – Unexpected financial circumstances catch me when I least expect it – 11 percent
- Freddy Krueger from “Nightmare on Elm Street” – My financial situation haunts my dreams and I lay awake at night worrying about it – 11 percent
- Jason Voorhees from “Friday the 13th” – I’m ashamed of my current financial situation and feel like I’m hiding behind a mask – 6 percent
- Chucky from “Child’s Play” – I’m immature with my finances and need to grow up – 3 percent
This survey was conducted online nationwide by Harris Interactive on behalf of CouponCabin.com from October 12-14, 2011 among 2,258 U.S. adults aged 18 and older.
Scary movies won’t be the only thing doing the spooking this season. Halloween expenses can quickly cause fright, and one-third (33 percent) of U.S. adults who celebrate Halloween and plan to spend any money plan to use coupons to save on Halloween items this year. An additional one-in-five (20 percent) said they plan to celebrate Halloween this year without spending any money.
Not only will Halloween shoppers use coupons or keep their wallets closed to cut back on expenses; they also have some other tricks up their sleeves:
- Cut back on the number of items I buy (candy, costumes, decorations, etc…) – 38 percent
- Make costumes at home instead of buying them – 15 percent
- Be crafty and make my own decorations – 15 percent
- Hand out homemade treats instead of store-bought ones – 4 percent

While some Halloween spenders will err on the side of saving, others plan to spend more heavily on their treats. Of those who plan to celebrate Halloween, one-in-five (19 percent) said they plan to spend more than $50. Nearly three-in-four (74 percent) also reported that they will spend the same or more this year as compared to last.
