What Are Your Dating Deal Breakers?

Posted on February 8th, 2012 by Diane K

Whether you’re single, married or somewhere in between, chances are you’ve been on a date and heard Liz Lemon from TV’s “30 Rock” shouting in your head, “That’s a deal breaker!”

Well, you’re not alone. With Valentine’s Day just days away, cupid’s arrows are ready to be fly, but our new survey reveals that some daters could benefit from dating etiquette class. The survey reveals dating’s biggest deal breakers. Topping the list? Poor hygiene, at 84 percent. Hopefully love will be in the air this Valentine’s Day, and not the unpleasant scent of your date.

While poor hygiene is the biggest dating deal breaker, a variety of other dating missteps made the list:

  • Using their mobile phone too much; constantly texting, checking email – 75 percent
  • Being rude to a server or host/hostess – 73 percent
  • Talking too much about an ex – 70 percent
  • Flirting with the server or host/hostess – 61 percent
  • Date drinking too much alcohol – 60 percent
  • Aggressive driving – 49 percent
  • Not offering to pay for the whole date, or at least to pay for their share – 33 percent
  • Being too expensive of a date (e.g. ordering the most costly food and drink) – 31 percent
  • Talking about a potential long-term future together – 30 percent
  • Using websites or social media (e.g. Facebook) to find out information before the date – 26 percent

Women were significantly more likely than men to consider dating offenses deal breakers, in every case aside from being too expensive of a date, wherein men were significantly more likely (34 percent) to say that it was a deal breaker than women (28 percent). The biggest discrepancies in opinion on what constitutes a deal breaker between women and men were for using a mobile phone too much during a date, at 82 percent and 68 percent, respectively, and being rude to a server or host/hostess, at 80 percent and 65 percent, respectively.

Dating can have many hurdles, but one misstep daters can easily avoid are money mishaps. Many modern daters often offer to at least pay part of their share, and if not, are cognizant and order moderately priced items. No matter what the situation, though, daters should strive for politeness and tact, especially when making that critical first impression.

First impressions aren’t the only difficult part of dating, though. Selecting the right Valentine’s Day gift can also be challenging ground in the land of courtship. When asked what was the worst Valentine’s Day gifts they’ve ever received, U.S. adults said the following:

  • Bathroom scale
  • Birthday card. Valentine’s Day is not my birthday.
  • Pooper-scooper
  • Dead butterfly mounted in a plastic case. It was our second date.
  • Break-up text
  • Card stating a donation was made in my name for a charity I don’t support.
  • Laundry basket
  • Pair of silk boxers that had someone else’s name on the gift tag.
  • Stuffed animal that looked like it was won out of one of those claw games.
  • Electric can opener
  • Lottery tickets
  • Tupperware
  • Snowshoes

What Would You Miss to Attend the Super Bowl?

Posted on January 25th, 2012 by Diane K

The teams are set (it’s The New York Giants vs. The New England Patriots, in case you live under a rock) and Super Bowl 46 is just days away. Here at CouponCabin.com, we are consumed with prepping for the big day. In the next few days, you’ll be seeing some great Super Bowl deals and party planning tips so stay tuned.

All this Super Bowl talk got us wondering if everyone else is as crazy about the Super Bowl as we are. Our latest CouponCabin survey showed that nearly four-in-ten U.S. adults said the Super Bowl is the best major sporting event. We also asked which life events they would miss to attend a Super Bowl game featuring their favorite NFL team and the results were shocking. Of those who have a favorite NFL team, the top response was a vacation at 23 percent, followed by:

  • An important work responsibility – 21 percent
  • Wedding of a close friend or family member – 20 percent
  • Funeral of a loved one – 19 percent
  • Birth of their child – 15 percent

Missing major life events for a Super Bowl game demonstrates the NFL football game’s widespread popularity among Americans. Unsurprisingly, 56 percent of U.S. adults said they plan to watch the Super Bowl this year. Men are significantly more likely to watch the Super Bowl this year at 67 percent, compared to 46 percent of women.

Not everyone watches the Super Bowl solely for love of the game, though. While 47 percent of those who plan to watch the Super Bowl this year said it’s because they love NFL football and would never miss it, others reported different reasons for tuning in. Nearly four-in-ten (37 percent) said they will watch the game primarily for the commercials. Women are significantly more likely to do this than men, at 44 percent to 31 percent, respectively. One-third (33 percent) said they will watch the game because it’s fun to go to a Super Bowl party. Check in tomorrow for our Super Bowl party tips!

No matter what the reason for tuning into the Super Bowl, many viewers get caught up in the fun and activities associated with the game and end up overspending. It’s important to be prudent and not break your budget, especially if you’re hosting a party or traveling to see your team. In addition, those who plan to wager on the game, whether in office pools or more serious arenas, should make sure they exercise caution to not get carried away.

Betting on the Super Bowl is a common practice for many, as nearly one-third (31 percent) of U.S. adults said they’ve ever bet on the outcome of a Super Bowl game in the past. Men are significantly more likely than women to say they’ve bet on the game, at 41 percent and 21 percent, respectively. When it comes to wins and losses, the survey found the following of U.S. adults who’ve ever bet on a Super Bowl:

  • Won $100 or more – 44 percent
  • Won $201 – $500 – 12 percent
  • Won $501 or more – 7 percent
  • Lost money betting on the Super Bowl – 92 percent
  • Lost $100 or more – 14 percent

The Super Bowl is only a few weeks away and whether you tune in to watch the game or just enjoy the commercials, it’s an exciting event. Over the years, we’ve seen some incredible commercials that have stuck with us over the years. A few of our favorites are below.

The Budweiser Frogs

Who can forget the famous “Bud…” “Weis…” “Er…” frogs? These little guys hopped their way into our hearts – and our minds – with their catchy banter in 1995.

The CareerBuilder Monkeys

These monkeys were supposed to illustrate bad working conditions and prompt folks to look for new jobs in this CareerBuilder ad from 2006. But frankly, these adorable monkeys are total party animals and seem like a ton of fun!

5 Ways to Wear Your Holiday Clothing All Winter

5 Ways to Wear Your Holiday Clothing All YearJust because the holidays are over doesn’t mean you have to put away your cute festive outfits until next year. This article from Refinery29 inspired us to pull out our holiday pieces and take inventory of what we can still wear. Sparkles, glitter and bright colors are the perfect way to spice up the dull winter months, as long as you wear them correctly! See below for 5 ways to rock your holiday gear all year long.

Nails

We are obsessed with sparkles – but there’s a time and a place. Keep your nails festive all winter with a great sparkly nail color from the salon or if you’re feeling really crafty, make your own with help from Allure magazine.

Sequins

Sequins can be appropriate for daytime (as long as it’s not your New Year’s Eve miniskirt). Throw a cardigan or blazer over your sequined shirt, invest in a pair of sequin flats or top off your look with a sequin scarf. Remember – a little sequin goes a long way.

Statement jewelry

That fun bib necklace and giant cocktail ring that you wore to all the holiday parties can still work. Just don’t wear them together (or with your sequins) – use sparingly and with toned down outfits. (more…)

Would You Use a Coupon for Plastic Surgery?

Posted on January 18th, 2012 by Diane K

The onslaught of coupon and daily deal websites has brought couponing into an entirely new arena. Shoppers can score incredible discounts on standard items like clothing, travel and restaurants but we’ve noticed that the coupon craze has branched out into unusual territory: plastic surgery and other medical procedures.

In a recent survey, we addressed the topic of using coupons for plastic surgery or other medical and cosmetic procedures. The surprising result: nearly one-in-four U.S. adults (23 percent) would consider getting plastic surgery if cost weren’t an issue.

Women were more likely than men to indicate this, at 28 percent and 18 percent respectively. A smaller amount of U.S. adults (15 percent) said they would consider getting plastic surgery, regardless of cost. Additionally, 5 percent have already used a coupon or daily deal for a medical procedure. (more…)

5 Easy Home Cold Remedies

Posted on January 6th, 2012 by Diane K

Home Remedies for a Winter Cold

You’ve done everything you can: obsessively washed your hands, exercised regularly, drank a ton of orange juice and ate an apple a day. But sometimes, no matter what you do, you catch the dreaded winter cold. It’s widely known that there is no true cure for the common cold, but we came up with a few home remedies to help you get through the misery of a winter cold without breaking the bank. Don’t waste your money on expensive over-the-counter medications when you can just use what you already have at home.

1. Drink fluids. This is the oldest trick in the book but it truly helps. Drink green tea with honey, tons of water, hot chicken broth, anything you can get your hands on. The more you drink, the better you’ll feel.

2. Make your own nasal spray. We got this cheap and easy recipe from WebMd.com.

  • Mix 1/4 teaspoon salt and 1/4 teaspoon baking soda in 8 ounces of warm water.
  • Fill a bulb syringe with this mixture (or use a Neti pot, available at most health foods stores).
  • Lean your head over a basin, and using the bulb syringe, gently squirt the salt water into your nose.
  • Hold one nostril closed by applying light finger pressure while squirting the salt mixture into the other nostril.
  • Let it drain.
  • Repeat two to three times, and then treat the other nostril. (more…)
