The Price of Gym Memberships: Is It Worth It?
Filed Under:
Losing weight and getting in shape are typically top resolutions for many, but can be challenging to achieve. We couldn’t help but wonder how many people made lofty fitness goals for the new year and how many will actually stick to them.
Surprisingly, according to a new CouponCabin survey, nearly three-in-four (74 percent) U.S. adults report they won’t be getting a new gym membership or renewing an existing one this year.
In addition, 7 percent of U.S. adults said they have signed up for a gym membership as a New Year’s resolution and quit before the year was over. In fact, seventy percent of those who quit within a year quit within five months, with 9 percent saying they quit in January and 15 percent quitting in February.
While the majority of U.S. adults don’t plan to get a new gym membership or renew an existing one, 20 percent said they would do so. Of those who currently have a gym membership, 53 percent said they go to the gym once a week or more, with 15 percent saying they go once a day or more. Men are significantly more likely to go to the gym than women, at 79 percent and 67 percent, respectively.
Gym membership costs may be one reason why few plan to get new and renew existing ones. Fifteen percent of gym membership holders said they pay more than $50 per month for their membership, adding up to more than $600 or more per year. On the flip side, many are able to find more affordable facilities, as 85 percent report they pay $50 or less for their memberships. How much is fitness worth to you?
Some tips for saving on fitness:
- Consider the many options around you, such as shoveling snow, utilizing free on-demand fitness programs offered by your cable provider and just going for a brisk walk.
- Sometimes starting small is the best way to achieve your goals. If you aren’t a runner, don’t make a resolution to win a marathon. Making goals easier to obtain will keep you motivated.
- Eating better is half the battle. Skip the sweets, drink more water and eat more veggies and lean meats.
