American Red Cross Chicago
Zach
I chose The American Red Cross because they respond to national and international disasters, and are also on call 24/7 to supply immediate relief for displaced victims of residential disasters such as fires and floods. My community witnessed firsthand the commitment and care that The American Red Cross provides when a devastating tornado ripped through Plainfield, Il., 20 years ago. The American Red Cross is one of the first organizations to lend a helping hand when these disasters strike, responding to 3 to 4 calls daily. Along with the much-needed assistance the organization provides, they also provide many volunteer opportunities for individuals to lend support to their communities.

Bear Necessities
Diane
I chose Bear Necessities because of its Bear Hugs program, which makes it possible for every child to have one moment and one day of happiness. The program aims to brighten the day of a child fighting cancer and to create a day that the child will always remember. I am grateful that we are able to help and will continue to support Bear Necessities and their programs.

Chicago Cares
Jessica
For four years, I have been involved with Chicago Cares, an organization that focuses on building stronger individuals and communities through various volunteer projects involving children, senior citizens, the homeless, adults with disabilities or the environment. Volunteering has always been a part of my life since I was young, so supporting a charity that organizes projects, recruits volunteers, and builds awareness is something that is very important to me.

Common Threads
Amanda
I chose Common Threads for my charity because it helps to teach children from low-income families about nutrition and different cultures. It gives them the tools to live a healthy life and is a present-day depiction of the old proverb “Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.”

Court Appointed Special Advocates
Samm
I picked CASA of Cook County because so many children get lost in the foster care system and this is a way for them to have someone they can count on and trust. CASA advocates give foster children hope for a safe and stable family life. I think investing in the future of children is always a great cause.

Deborah’s Place
Jackie
I chose Deborah’s Place because it is an organization that re-empowers Chicago women while fighting homelessness. Deborah’s Place not only offers housing, but also offers support to the women to achieve their goals of stable housing, sustainable income and greater self-determination. Sometimes it just takes a bit of help to get to where you want to go.

Dreams for Kids
Kristen
I chose Dreams For Kids because I wanted to be able to contribute to a cause that would help children understand that despite their hardships in life, they too are special and that their dreams can come true. I wanted to a part of something that allows children living in poverty and those with disabilities to feel empowered and have a sense of hope. I believe Dreams For Kids is truly changing the world one kid at a time, and I am so happy I get to be a part of it!

Scott
In this economy, everyone could use an extra hand at achieving his or her employment goals. I feel that Harborquest plays a very important role in helping people that are chronically underemployed get back on their feet.

Ignite the Spirit
Billy
As the son of a Chicago fireman, I have always had deep respect for the men and women who take on this exhausting and dangerous job. I chose Ignite The Spirit, a charity for emergency responders, paramedics, and firefighters. Ignite the Spirit not only looks to aid families who have lost a loved one in the line of duty, but also supports many Chicago communities through activities and events.

Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation
Meghan
After marrying into a family with a history of diabetes, especially Type 1 Juvenile Diabetes, I have seen first hand how this can affect people, their lives and their families. I will soon be starting a family of my own and my children will be at a high risk of Type 1 diabetes. As much as I hope they find a cure or cause for the illness, I would also like to help educate more families on the importance of understanding the illness and how to lead a healthier life.

Lincoln Park Community Shelter
Trisha
Throughout my volunteer work at Lincoln Park Community Shelter, I have come to realize the hardships that so many men and women face on a day-to-day basis. LPCS helps those suffering find a means to survive and instills hope that one day a life that at one point seemed so empty will now be fulfilled.
