Every store can't carry everything that's available online. It's the same reason every Macy's, Penneys, or Sears doesn't carry EVERY online item. When items don't sell, REI does 3 things, one discount it in store, send it to a store where the product is selling, and send it back to one of the warehouses to be sold online. That means stores make room for newer items and customers find better deals. REI makes the "SHIP TO STORE" option FREE. Select it at check out and you'll receive notification when it arrives. I've never had an item arrive after the estimated arrival date. Having ordered about a hundred items and dozens of orders, that's an impressive track record.
I'm an avid hiker and for a strip mall store, REI really does have a great selection. They don't have the ultra premium brands that you'll fine at online specialty stores but they certainly have it all for the weekend warrior hiker who's looking to do it on the cheap or drop some good money. My only complaint is that the suburban sales associates sometimes think they're more of an expert climber than they really are.
I've been looking for a good helmet and bike lock for my new bike. This store has a wonderfully clean and navigable UI, and had the things that i wanted, plus free shipping. So an easy choice for me!
