The family maintained their culture and traditions, and Vivian grew up observing the vibrant Lebanese customs. She's watched and learned as her mother and grandmother prepared traditional Middle Eastern cuisine from time-honored recipes, which were then handed down to Vivian. The Lebanese culture is passionate, full of love and respect, and delights in entertaining. These qualities have been the way Vivian has lived her life since childhood. Vivian continued in the tradition of her family, cooking delicious and healthy Middle Eastern meals for her own family and friends. At their urging, she decided to share her family's recipes and the Lebanese tradition of hospitality with the community by opening Mezza Middle Eastern Cuisine. Mezza means "appetizer" in Arabic, but the menu at Mezza goes far beyond appetizers. Bar Carlo was opened by a trio of Portlanders with a love of neighborhood and good, honest food. We've taken our experience from Detour and Acme and poured a whole lot of love into our newest eatery, Bar Carlo.Our building itself is steeped in culinary tradition; before Bar Carlo opened its doors, a traditional Russian eatery, known for reasonable traditional fare, occupied the premises. We've even heard tell of a biker bar in this very spot!Bar Carlo is nestled in Portland's Foster-Powell neighborhood. Initially a dusty trail frequented by farmers in route downtown, Foster was modeled after wide Parisian boulevards, ideal for strollers.
