Blarney South 328 South St Philadelphia, PA 19147 (215) 413-8294 |
The Blarney Stone in all its glory is a famous Irish relic that has been surrounded by legend and history for hundreds of years. It came to be known after an upset in the tribal leadership that had ruled the South of the country for generations. A plan was devised by the people to oust the tyrant and it fell into the hands of one of the locals who worked as the culinary advisor to the King Caolmhin Pa. The rebel obtained his provisions in Frankie Nolan's pantry on Shandon Street and spiced a chicken sandwich with such ferocity and vulcanity that it was sure to render the tyrant king useless. The tyrant tried the culinary masterpiece and after a few moments, fell to the ground in ecstasy. He had never tasted anything like this in his entire life. Thus began the reversal of control that turned a once evil and heartless ruler into a humble servant. The Blarney Stone was finally returned to its rightful owners. Or so they say! The Blarney Restaurant combines old world tradition and atmosphere with the demands of today's modern society. Featuring something sure to tempt every palate, the restaurant is the perfect destination for casual dining or social get-togethers. Notable selections include the Bacon and Blue Cheese Burger (lettuce, tomato, pickle and fries,) Grilled Atlantic Salmon (with creamy honey mustard sauce,) Bangers and Mash (imported Irish sausage with mashed potatoes) and the Cheese Steak Pasta (delicious tender sliced steak blended with a creamy cheese sauce.) Stop by and experience the old world charm of Ireland.

Snockey's Original Oyster House 1020 South 2nd Street Philadelphia, PA 19147 (215) 339-9578 |
On May 3, 1912 ( 3 weeks after the sinking of the Titanic ) Frank & Rose Snock opened the 1st Snockey's at 142 South St. in Philadelphia. Rose Snock was pregnant at the time as fate would have it, she gave birth to their first child, a daughter named Jean, on the 2nd floor of their newly opened oyster house. Within days Rose was in the kitchen making oyster stews and fried oysters. In 1918, the restaurant moved to 761 S. 2nd St. in the Queen Village section of the city. Rose raised a family of 4 at that location until they purchased an old Ice Cream parlor just off of South St at 523 S. 8th St. in 1931. This would be there home for the next 44 years. Sons Ed & Bob ran the restaurant, under the watchful eye of Rose, from the mid-forties until their retirements in 1996. Ed worked until the age of 82 while Bob retired at 76. Due to illness, Rose finally hung up her apron in 1991 after 79 years in the kitchen. She lived to be 95 years old. In 1975 the restaurant was forced to move (due to progress on South Street !!!) to it's present location at 1020 South 2nd Street. 95 years have come and gone and Snockey's steadfastly maintains it's roots as a "Classic Oyster House". Now run by Ed's sons, Skip and Ken, tradition is as much a part of the menu as is "Mrs Snockey's Oyster Stew"! As the oldest continually operating Seafood Restaurant in Philadelphia the menu now has been expanded to include all the riches of the seas. Scallops, Jumbo Crabs, Mussells, Lobsters, 6 fresh fish daily, and beautiful Crab cakes are featured everyday. From the Raw Bar comes the freshest oysters and plumpest clams that can be found. The oyster selection typically features 6 varieties while both raw and steamed Littleneck, Top Neck, Cherrystones are always available. "All you can eat" Crab nights, are every Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursdays are extremely popular. With 95 years in business.

Chima Brazilian Steakhouse 1901 JFK Boulevard Philadelphia, PA 19103 (215) 525-3233 |
Chima Steakhouse-named after chimarrao, a traditional drink of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, that symbolizes hospitality and friendship-certainly lives up to its name. Legend has it, in South Brazil traditional gauchos (cowboys) would consume a diet that consisted almost entirely of beef. The meat was seasoned (Rodizio), placed on skewers, and slow cooked over a wood burning flame. Historically, gauchos were known for their generosity and hospitality. The first Chima restaurant originated in Uberlandia, Brazil located in the state of Minas Gerais. In 2004, Bruno Silva introduced a new style of dining and superior service to Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Chima combined traditional Brazilian rodizio and excellent service with an elegant setting.Gauchos roam the dining room continuously offering exquisite churrasco of 16 rotisserie meats including prime rib, sirloin, lamb, chicken, sausage, fish and more. Chima's sumptuous salad bar blends Brazilian and American favorites from salads, oven-fresh breads and soup. Menu options vary offering rodizio (a selection of all the meats Chima carries) and salad bar or the salad bar only. Offering a selection of great wines and champagnes from across the world and a full liquor bar, Chima is a place for friends and family to enjoy each other and great food. We only offer a fixed price menu. South Philadelphia Tap Room 1509 Mifflin St. Philadelphia, PA 19145 (215) 271-7787 |
The South Philadelphia Tap Room is a pretty damned fine establishment, there are 13 taps, local breweries and Belgian imports are strongly featured and back up by an eclectic 100 bottle selection. A long spacious bar with booths, exposed brick and garlands of white fairy lights create it's downright pleasant atmosphere, attracting a hip (but not hipper-than-thou) predominantly twenty-to thirty something crowd. The bar staff is friendly and laid back. But attentive. To describe SPTR in a nutshell would be to call it your favorite neighborhood hangout and a high-quality beer joint wrapped together. With a couple of TVs, a seriously interesting menu, a down-to-earth urban tavern environment, and great beers from both the local and the world scenes, you can start to understand why SPTR is getting such rave reviews... See, who says you can't get good beer deep in the heart of South Philly? I can only imagine which frontier is next!.Come in and try us out tonight.

Serrano and Tin Angel 20 South 2nd Street Philadelphia, PA 19106 (215) 928-0770 |
Flavored martinis were all the rage in the mid-'90s, but Serrano began the experiment with them years before they took off. We studied the menu, the interesting mix of Asian, Mexican, Indian and Mediterranean fare at moderate prices. Serrano has always been on the cutting edge of cuisine. When you walk into Serrano immediately you are struck by the romantic look of the restaurant. The fire was roaring in the fireplace. Attentive staff saw to everyone's needs as we slipped onto bar stools and got our first taste of peppery martinis. If you're looking for a complete evening out, enjoy dinner at Serrano and proceed upstairs to the Tin Angel, where myriad folk, jazz and pop acts perform sets at popular prices. I think I'll get a group of friends together and do just that.Tin Angel Acoustic Cafe. Tin Angel is a unique music venue featuring a wide variety of top flight national and local attractions in an intimate cafe style setting. In addition to excellent acoustic and other "unplugged" entertainment, Tin Angel offers candle lit table seating, great coffees, cappuccinos, teas and desserts, as well as a complete selection of liquors, wines, beers and mineral waters.Everything a neighborhood restaurant should be. Cafe Apamate 1620 South Street Philadelphia, PA 19146 (215) 790-1620 |
"Apamate" is named for the extraordinary blooming tree of Venezuela that stands out in a sea of green. We aim to stand out in our own way and we do that in part by naming our traditionally Spanish restaurant after something Venezuelan. It reflects who our Chef is and pays homage to the country she hails from while preparing the food that she loves. We are part of the slow movement in Philadelphia. We support organic, pasture fed meats and local farmers who struggle like us to make a difference in the world. We have a relationship with them not only to buy the best in food quality, but also to make a difference with our choices in supporting people who produce the best using minimal impact farming. With a dash of creativity and solid roots in tradition, we welcome you to remember your trip to the coast of Donosti and if you don't have that memory let us introduce you. It's warm and you are always welcome to join us for a family tradition in our kitchen, at our table.. Apamate is one of a kind.

Cedars Restaurant 616 South 2nd St Philadelphia, PA 19147 (215) 925-4950 |
Info for restaurant description - Cedars Restaurant_Philadelphia_PAIn a historic building replete with Middle Eastern decor, the custom continues here at Cedars Restaurant where award-winning and authentic dishes are freshly prepared. Come enjoy the unique dining experience and discover the trememdous ambience, friendly service, great Middle Eastern wines, and moderate prices. If you're tired of mediocre Middle Eastern fare presented in less-than-appealing surroundings, Cedars Restaurant is the obvious step up. With exposed-brick walls, Persian rugs, and high ceilings, the space here reminds you more of an English manor house than a desert palace, but the food puts you in the right geographic state (not to mention gastronomic). Cedar's Restuarnt menu is extensive, especially in the meatless area, giving vegetarians their fair share of choices. Avoid a lot of decision-making and order the "mazza," a large sampler plate. With more than enough hummus, baba ghannooj, stuffed grape leaves, tabooli and falafel for two hungry diners, this is a great way to fill up on several of Cedar's Restaurant many flavors. If that sounds like too much food, try the fattouch salad, alive with fresh lemon and served with toasted pita bread. Craving heartier fare? Kabobs and roasted lamb fill the bill; both are done to a tender balance and served with an excellent yogurt sauce to cool off the spice.

Vango 116 S. 18th Street Philadelphia, PA 19103 (215) 568-1020 |
Two years ago, Dia Sawan started toying with the notion of a club like no other he'd ever seen. The owner of Byblos along Philadelphia's formidable Rittenhouse Row whose family formed a dynasty of the area's best Mediterranean restaurants (Cedars, Fez) had already made his hookah lounge and restaurant a sensation before that trend commenced. Why not try to strike lightening twice. That's why two years later, there's Vango Lounge & Sky Bar at 116 S. 18th Street - the boldest of Philadelphia's restaurant lounges starring some of the best names in the food and DJ business. If the address seems familiar to Sawan watchers, it should: his intimate Byblos is below Vango at the same address. But from its massive oak doors and portal windows below to its dramatic roof deck view of the city above, no one will ever confuse the two. That's just the start. At somewhere around 8,000 square feet, Vango is as massive a space as it was an undertaking to get just the right custom made elements from around the world to fill the big rooms. "That's why it took so long," says Sawan. "Everything had to be unique. No. Everything is really and truly unique, personal even." Perhaps that's why Sawan decided to oversee the vision of Vango with help from several prominent designers. Along the walls of its second floor walkup, there's over 200 carved out spaces into which is an illuminated vodka bottle. If that sounds strange, it's meant to. Says Sawan: "We put up the bottles. The vodka companies gave us the product." Smart. Smarter still is the crinkle-crushed-velvet along Vango's second-floor walls spectacularly speckled by a zillion inlaid lights. There's Nina Hazouri's plush custom-made and upholstered cushioned couches; set pieces tucked within private booths and below grand dramatic archways. "Everything is custom-made for Vango, says Sawan, pointing out even the littlest details.

13 Restaurant & Bar @ Philadelphia Marriott Downtown 1201 Market St Philadelphia, PA 19107 (215) 625-6795 |
Why 13? It's simple...really. Once our Chef created a menu featuring timeless American Classics with a contemporary twist, it seemed obvious that we should honor what Philadelphia means, historically, to our nation. Most significantly, the "City of Brotherly Love" was the city in which our Forefathers signed the Declaration of Independence effectively turning 13 ragtag British colonies into these United States. A moment that actually defines a nation - our nation. This document is formally entitled "the unanimous Declaration of the thirteen United States of America." Thirteen may be viewed as an unlucky number by some, but in terms of Philadelphia history and America destiny-13 is just fine by us. Good thing we're not a superstitious lot. Declare your independence from average fare and enjoy our Chef crafted American Inspired selections!

Artful Dodger Beef & Ale House 400 South 2nd Street Philadelphia, PA 19147 (215) 922-1790 |
Origin of the NameThe Artful Dodger was a character in the Charles Dickens classic, "Oliver Twist", a work that has been performed live in theatres large and small as well as on the big screen where it won an Academy Award in 1967.The NeighborhoodArtful Dodger is situated in Philadelphia's oldest neighborhood, Society Hill, at Head House Square. Society Hill is located on the southerly portion of William Penn's original settlement and was named for a tract given to the Free Society of Traders in 1685. In 1745, a "New Market" was established on this block to serve the growing communities in Society Hill and Southwark. In 1805 the existing Head House replaced "The Shambles" and included a firehouse at the north end of the structure. The cobblestone streets where our Founding Fathers once walked are a great setting for a cozy pub.The pub once served as the barracks for the First Continental Marine Corps. The structure dates back to the early 1800's. While it is rich in history, it remains an active part of the neighborhood where you can enjoy a pint of ale, great food, sports, music, and other activities. Kabul Restaurant 106 Chestnut St. Philadelphia, PA 19106 (215) 922-3676 |
Kabul is recognized as one of the area's restaurants for "consistently delightful," "absolutely delicious" and "wonderfully spiced" authentic, Afghan fare. Rated Excellent as reviewed in "Philadelphia Restaurants" by Zagat Survey American taste buds have been changed forever. Kabul, an adventure in exotic dining, uncommon to Philadelphians, is the city's first and original Afghan restaurant since 1991. Kabul is the kind of restaurant people return to again and again for the best of all possible reasons: fine, fresh, attractively presented food; attentive, agreeable service; pleasant surroundings; reasonable prices plus a profusion of discounts. The restaurant is chef and family owned and operated. That means that everyone involved with your order equates your pleasure with their prosperity.Kabul's menu is characterized predominantly by uniquely spiced lamb and chicken main courses, recently expanded to include an ample sampling of vegetarian dishes. Everything - bread to salad dressing to desserts - is prepared on the premises. The sauces are subtle and sophisticated. All the food is marinated in herbs and spices in order to achieve the true flavor of Afghan cuisine. As for the desserts, Elaine Tait, an Inquirer restaurant critic, once wrote, "I've grown accustomed to ethnic desserts that don't always measure up to our standards for sweets. What we're served at Kabul, however, were unusual but familiar enough to satisfy a majority of American sweet- lovers."At Kabul, half the fun of eating Afghan food is the atmosphere. The soothingly alto Afghan music immediately sets a tranquil mood. The decor intrigues: pink walls adorned with colorful native rugs, striped costumes and portraits of stoic warriors. To complete the ambiance, the restaurant is lit primarily by candlelight.

A Full Plate Cafe 1040 North American St. Unit 1101 Philadelphia, PA 19123 (213) 627-4068 |
When looking around A Full Plate, The design is emphatically rustic modern. There is a balance where old meets new. The walls are awash in concord grape purple, lime green, and blood orange. The tables are hand-painted with a technique called "vinegar paint" by friend and local artist, Lori Albright, emboldened by a menagerie of chairs. The floor is a hand-laid, slapdash medley of wooden planks. Pots and pans, made from old copper and iron, frame the front doors. We included old wooden doors, windows, antique cooking tools, and bric-a-brac throughout the caf. When making decisions about the menu, we wanted our guests to be able to have some control over their meal. Our concept was simple. One owner is a vegetarian and very conscious of the lack of choices here in Philly when you go out to eat with your meat-eating friends. We wanted to create a menu that would make all vegetarians, vegans, and carnivores excited about the selections. So we came up with home cooking, Southern influenced, healthy food. On the whole, our dishes are a la carte, and our list of sides is quite extensive. We encourage you to taste them all and maybe give those Brussels sprouts you hated as a kid another try. We want to introduce people to new ways of eating and preparing food. Whether we feature beets, turnips or salsify, as our root vegetable of the day, we hope that you are trying something new or enjoying an old favorite. We can't talk about the menu without mentioning the fried chicken and waffles. It is our take on an old Southern favorite; served on a Belgian waffle, topped with seasoned breaded boneless chicken tenders, covered with a sweet-and-spicy BBQ syrup. Voted #2 Best Waffle in the City, by the Philadelphia CityPaper, it is one of our most popular dishes.
