Three-in-Four U.S. Adults Wish They Had Been More Educated About Finances When They Were Younger

Three-in-Four U.S. Adults Wish They Had Been More Educated About Finances When They Were Children, Reveals New CouponCabin.com Survey

–Nearly Eight-in-Ten Parents Talk to Their Children About Managing Money–

WHITING, Ind., August 15, 2012 – Bad habits start early, especially when it comes to money. A new survey from CouponCabin.com reveals that three-in-four (75 percent) of U.S. adults wish they had been more educated about money when they were younger. To help stop that cycle, nearly eight-in-ten (77 percent) parents said they currently talk to their children about the importance of managing money. An additional 21 percent said they don’t currently talk to their children about financial topics, but plan to start. This survey was conducted online nationwide by Harris Interactive on behalf of CouponCabin.com from July 31th – August 2nd, 2012, among 2,262 U.S. adults age 18 and older, of whom 461 were parents of children ages 3-17. For the purposes of this survey, parents are defined as U.S. parents with children ages 3-17.

When it comes to teaching children about financial issues, many parents start with the fundamentals. When asked what financial topics are most important for children to learn, U.S. adults said the following:

  • Basics of a savings account – 79 percent
  • Creating budgets – 75 percent
  • Being frugal, such as bargain hunting, using coupons, saving money, etc… – 72 percent
  • Basics of credit cards – 65 percent
  • Basics of student loans for higher education – 48 percent
  • Making investments – 40 percent
  • Other – 9 percent

Sometimes, it can be challenging to find the right opportunity to teach children about money. More than one-quarter (26 percent) of parents use finance-related current events such as stock market changes and debt debates in Congress as an excuse to discuss financial topics with their children.

“It can be tough to fit in financial learning amidst busy school and activity schedules, but many parents take advantage of everyday happenings to talk to their kids about good money habits,” said Jackie Warrick, President and Chief Savings Officer at CouponCabin.com. “Start conversations with your children when you pay for something at the grocery store or they see you using coupons. Small and natural discussions about money can be the best building blocks to raising financially fit kids.”

Another common way to teach good financial habits is with an allowance. In fact, nearly three-in-four (72 percent) parents report they give their children an allowance, up from 45 percent last year. Parents that dole out an allowance cited the following reasons behind it:

  • Teaches them the value of a dollar – 77 percent
  • Earning money encourages them to be responsible – 73 percent
  • Earning money encourages them to do their chores – 60 percent
  • Introduces them to the basics of budgeting – 60 percent

These surveys were conducted online within the United States by Harris Interactive on behalf of CouponCabin from July 31th – August 2nd, 2012, among 2,262 U.S. adults ages 18 and older, of whom 461 were parents of children aged 3-17 and from July 19-21, 2011 among 2,293 U.S. adults ages 18 and older of whom 556 were parents of children aged 3-17. New Survey: U.S. Adults Plan to Spend More on Fall Fashion This Year

U.S. Adults Plan to Spend More on Fall Fashion Shopping This Year, Finds New CouponCabin Survey

–More Than One-Quarter Will Shop for More Clothes For Themselves This Year–

WHITING, Ind., August 8, 2012 – The summer sun is still shining, but many U.S. adults report they are ready to open their wallets for the upcoming fall fashion season. A new survey from CouponCabin.com reveals that U.S. adults plan to spend more on fall clothes this year compared to last year. Nearly one-in-five (19 percent) plan to spend more than $250 on fall clothes for themselves this year, compared to 15 percent who said the same last year. In addition, 7 percent will spend more than $500 compared to 5 percent who said the same last year. This survey was conducted online within the United States by Harris Interactive on behalf of CouponCabin from July 26th – 30th, 2012, among 2,207 U.S. adults ages 18 and older.

Not only do U.S. adults plan to spend more on fall fashions this year, they also plan to buy more items. More than one-quarter (29 percent) of those who purchased fall clothes last year will shop for more fall clothes this year.

When it comes to what will be filling their closets, many shoppers factor in high fashion when making apparel-buying decisions. More than one-in-ten (13 percent) plan to take fall fashion trends like over-the-knee boots, geometric prints and printed denim into consideration when shopping for clothes this fall.

“Regardless of what apparel items consumers plan to buy this upcoming season, it’s encouraging to see that more people are comfortable spending money on non-necessity items,” said Jackie Warrick, President and Chief Savings Officer at CouponCabin.com. “Fall shoppers will keep that spending in check, though, as many who have families put expenses for their children’s fall needs before their own.”

Children rule the roost when it comes to fall spending. Nearly three-in-four (73 percent) of parents with children living at home said they don’t spend more money on fall clothing for themselves than they do for their children. On the flip side, 13 percent said they do spend more on fall clothes for themselves than their kids.

School supplies like folders, pens and backpacks will also dominate fall shoppers’ budgets. Fifty percent of parents with children living at home typically spend more on back-to-school supplies for their children than on fall clothing for themselves. Thirty-one percent said they don’t, while 10 percent aren’t sure.

–U.S. Adults Share Tactics They Plan to Use to Save Money on Groceries–

WHITING, Ind., August 1, 2012 – With the recent U.S. Agriculture Department forecast that food prices will rise throughout the next year due to widespread drought, many Americans report they are concerned about the upcoming high costs. A new CouponCabin.com survey reveals that more than one-third (36 percent) of U.S. adults are very concerned that the drought will lead to higher food prices. Overall, 94 percent are at least somewhat concerned about the issue. This survey was conducted online within the United States by Harris Interactive on behalf of CouponCabin from July 20th – July 24th, 2012, among 2,208 U.S. adults ages 18 and older.

As the summer heat drags on with little relief and a dearth of rain, U.S. adults report they are keeping an eye on the developments. Nearly nine-in-ten (86 percent) said they are aware of the recent drought issues, with 43 percent of those saying they have been following the news regarding the drought.

With food prices set to rise, U.S. adults plan to employ a variety of strategies to save cash. When asked which of the following tactics, if any, U.S. adults plan to use to save money if food prices start to rise at the grocery store, they said the following:

When asked what was the most creative thing they’ve ever done to save money on food costs, a random sampling of U.S. adults reported the following:

  • Added fillers such as rice and noodles to leftovers of food that were inexpensive to cook in the first place.
  • Bought in bulk and then split costs with neighbors.
  • Bought small plates at a dollar store to cut down on portions.
  • Bought a lot when products were on sale due to scratches, dents or dings.
  • Held a coupon swapping party with friends.
  • Ate a more vegetarian-oriented diet.
  • Ate everything I had at home before going to the grocery store.
  • Froze fruit for winter when it’s cheap over the summer.
  • Went to the farmers’ market instead of the grocery store.
  • Ground our own flour and sunflower oil.
  • Shopped at day old bread stores.
  • I was a member of a community garden that has our own plots to grow things in as well as larger crops that are shared among the group.
  • Ate more one-pot dinners like soups, stews and pastas.
  • Ground my own hamburger using cuts of beef that cost less than store-bought ground beef.
  • Used a vacuum sealer and freeze items.

New Survey: Back-to-School Shopping for Tech Gadgets

Forty-Two Percent of Parents Plan to Buy Electronic Gadgets for the Upcoming School Year, Finds New CouponCabin Survey

–Computers, Mobile Phones and Tablets Are Top Required Tech Purchases for Back-to-School–

WHITING, Ind., July 25, 2012 – As another school year approaches, the demand for electronics in the classroom may make budgeting for school supplies difficult. A new survey from CouponCabin.com reports that 42 percent of parents plan to buy new electronic gadgets, such as laptops, tablets, cellphones and e-readers, for their children for the upcoming school year. In addition, nearly half (49 percent) of parents said their children’s school requires them to purchase certain electronic gadgets for learning purposes. This survey was conducted online within the United States by Harris Interactive on behalf of CouponCabin from July 13th – July 17th, 2012, among 2,037 U.S. adults ages 18 and older.

When asked which of the following electronic gadgets, if any, their children’s school requires them to purchase, parents with school-age children said:

  • Computer – 24 percent
  • Mobile phone – 20 percent
  • Tablet – 19 percent
  • E-reader – 9 percent
  • Other – 5 percent
  • None – 51 percent

With parents feeling the pressure to buy electronic gadgets for school use, 75 percent said they are at least somewhat overwhelmed with the cost of buying tech devices for their children. With 78 percent of adults planning to spend $500 or less per child on their back-to-school shopping, fitting these electronic devices in the budget will be a challenge.

Many parents will schedule their back-to-school shopping to save as much as money as possible. More than half (55 percent) of those who did any back-to-school shopping last year plan to do their shopping earlier this year. Thirty-seven percent of parents who plan to do back-to-school shopping this year would consider waiting until after the school year starts to save money.

“Since many schools require students to posses certain electronic gadgets, many parents are deciding to do their back-to-school shopping early to best budget their spending”, said Jackie Warrick, President and Chief Savings Officer at CouponCabin.com. “Parents that start shopping sooner rather than later have the luxury of time to seek out the best possible discounts on all kinds of items.”

When asked what their total budget is per child, U.S. adults who plan to do back-to-school shopping this year said the following:

  • $100 or less – 27 percent
  • $101- $200 – 26 percent
  • $201 – $500 – 25 percent
