Being a Freegan Named Most Extreme Money-Saving Tactic, Finds New CouponCabin.com Survey

 WHITING, Ind., June 12, 2013 – How far would you go to save money? Sometimes, tactics to spend less green can turn extreme. A new CouponCabin.com survey reveals what U.S. adults think are the most extreme and unusual tactics to spend less and save more, with being a “freegan,” topping the list. This survey was conducted online by Harris Interactive on behalf of CouponCabin.com from May 29th – 31st, 2013, among 2,085 U.S. adults ages 18 and older.

Being a freegan (i.e. dumpster diving, never buying new products) is America’s top selection among the most extreme spend less and save more tactics with 63 percent selecting it from a provided list. Here’s how some other wacky money-saving tactics stacked up:

  • Training pets to use the toilet – 47 percent
  • Donating fluids for money (e.g. blood, urine, sperm) – 37 percent
  • Extreme couponing (i.e. spending hours finding coupons, obsessively using coupons, and/or buying large amounts of discounted items) – 36 percent
  • Participating in a clinical trial of a new medication/treatment for money – 26 percent
  • Driving with an ad displayed on the side of your car – 25 percent
  • Getting paid for tasks (e.g. making a video, singing a song, running errands) by signing up on an online site such as Fiverr or TaskRabbit – 18 percent
  • Selling items in a pawn shop – 17 percent
  • Selling prized items on an online auction site – 16 percent

– Nearly Half Plan to Attend at Least One Wedding in Next 12 Months –

WHITING, Ind., June 5, 2013 – For most people, summer means long days, warm weather and vacation. For others, it means tuxes, registries and booked weekends – otherwise known as wedding season. Nearly half (48 percent) of U.S. adults plan on attending at least one wedding in the next 12 months, with 58 percent of 18-34 year olds saying the same, the most of any age group. Nearly one-in-ten (8 percent) 18-34 year olds plan to attend three or more weddings. This survey was conducted online within the United States by Harris Interactive on behalf of CouponCabin.com from May 22nd to 24th, 2013, among 2,050 U.S. adults ages 18 and older.

With so many “I do’s” on the calendar, it can lead to difficult money situations, especially for younger Americans. Nine percent of 18-34 year olds who attended a wedding in the past year report they are in debt because of those celebrations. More Than One-in-Ten U.S. Adults Consider Themselves to be Shopaholics, Reveals New CouponCabin.com Survey

– 15 Percent of U.S. Adults Report Shopping Habits Have Put Them in Debt –

WHITING, Ind., May 30, 2013 – Apple pie, baseball… and shopping? Hitting the stores is one of America’s favorite pastimes, but for some consumers, it can lead to challenging issues.  A new CouponCabin.com survey reveals that 15 percent of U.S. adults report their shopping habits have put them in debt, with 20 percent of saying the most amount of shopping debt they’ve been in exceeds $5,000. Two-in-five (41 percent) said at their peak, they’ve been in more than $1,000 of shopping debt. This survey was conducted online within the United States by Harris Interactive on behalf of CouponCabin.com from May 14th – 16th, 2013, among 2,052 U.S. adults ages 18 and older.

 Racking up debt can happen quickly with frequent purchases. This may be likely for the 11 percent of U.S. adults who consider themselves to be “shopaholics,” (i.e. addicted to shopping and never missing an opportunity to buy something). Dog Owners Spend More on Their Pets Than Cat Owners, Reveals New CouponCabin.com Survey

WHITING, Ind., May 22, 2013 – Dog person or cat person, Americans love their pets, but when it comes to how much is spent on them, dogs tip the scales. A new CouponCabin.com survey reveals that dog owners typically spend more per month on their furry friends than cat owners. Nearly half (47 percent) of dog owners spend more than $50 per month on their pets, significantly more than the 37 percent of cat owners who spend more than $50 per month on their pets. This survey was conducted online within the United States by Harris Interactive on behalf of CouponCabin.com from May 8th – 10th, 2013, among 2,072 U.S. adults ages 18 and older, among which 1,251 are pet owners.

Regardless of the type of pet, animal owners’ wallets can be strained taking care of their beloved companions. When pet owners were asked how much they typically spend per month on their pets, they said the following:

  • $1 – $50 – 62 percent
  • $51 – $100 – 22 percent
  • $101 – $200 – 9 percent
