How to Shop Target Without Paying Full Price

Target gets expensive when a quick errand turns into a cart full of things you never planned to buy. Keep the total under control with Target coupons and parts of the store's system that lower your cost before or after checkout.

  • 1. Get auto-apply savings with a single Target app scan

Utilize the Wallet barcode in the Target app at checkout. It can apply Target Circle deals, gift cards, and 5% Circle Card savings in one scan. Open the app before you get to the register so eligible discounts do not get left behind.

    2. Apply the 14-day price-match window instead of returning and rebuying

Claim the price match within 14 days if the item drops. Target matches eligible lower prices from Target stores, Target.com, and Target Circle deals on the identical item. Bring proof to Guest Services for store purchases. Rely on chat or call Guest Services for Target.com or app orders. Keep the Circle Card discount on the matched item, but do not expect Target coupons to stack with the price match.

Target also matches prices at other stores. The retailer will honor a lower price at Amazon, Best Buy, Walmart and other eligible stores.

    3. Take advantage of Drive Up or Order Pickup when you already know what you need

Select Drive Up or Order Pickup when the list is already set. Both are free. Ordering in the app cuts out the easiest way to overspend at Target: roaming the aisles and adding things that were never on the list.

  • 4. Shop with the Target Circle Card only where the 5% actually applies

Use the Circle Card on eligible Target purchases and stop assuming every item qualifies. The 5% discount does not apply to categories like alcohol, Target GiftCards, many prepaid cards, CVS pharmacy items, clinic services, and some Target Optical purchases. Run the card where it counts and skip the categories that do not earn the discount.

Don’t get stuck with the credit card version of the Target Circle Card. Interest rates will eliminate your 5% savings if you carry a balance on a card. To avoid this, apply for the Target Circle Debit or Reloadable card.

    5. Check Target Circle bonuses and verified discounts before checkout

Open Target Circle before you pay. Check for automatic deals, personalized bonuses, and verified discounts for groups like military members, college students, and teachers. Activate the account-based savings before checkout instead of hoping the shelf tag tells the whole story.

    6. Treat the return policy as a safety net, but know the real clock

Leverage the return window aggressively on trial purchases. Most unopened Target items in new condition can be returned within 90 days. Circle Card purchases usually get 30 extra days. Most opened beauty items can still be returned within 90 days with a receipt, or up to 120 days when purchased with a Circle Card. Keep the receipt or tie the order to your account so the return window stays usable.

How to Save Even More at Target

Start in the app. Check the Weekly Ad, activate Target Circle deals and bonuses, and utilize Drive Up or Order Pickup when the list is already set. Pay with a Target Circle Card when the purchase qualifies for 5% off and the extra return time matters. Then, apply the 14-day price-match window if the price drops after you buy.
