Here at CouponCabin, we’re pros when it comes to promo codes.

Our team of experts is busy hand-testing coupons every day. From fake coupons to once-a-year discounts that you can't miss, we've seen it all. We’ve also come to learn that there are promo code patterns that can help a shopper save. When you're ready to hit that checkout button but don't want to pay full price, our list of savings tips for common promo codes can help.

How do promo codes work?

Promo codes are a combination of numbers, letters and symbols that make up a specific savings code. Typically, you'll apply your promo codes on the online checkout page. You can enter a code into the designated text box and your discount will be applied.

Diane Lourmas veteran savings analyst, says shoppers should check the brand exclusions if a code does not work. “Most codes at Kohl’s and Target exclude premium brands like Apple, Dyson and LEGO. If you’re trying to buy a brand-name item, the code may not work. Remove these items to see if the savings apply.”

  • Common Promo Code: Welcome

Today, stores offer welcome discounts, but most retailers utilize unique promo codes beyond the basic WELCOME or WELCOME10 code. It’s important to know how to get a promo code from a store and brand. These expert tips can help:

    • Sign up for store emails. Joining an email list for a store can result in a welcome discount. For example, shoppers can get a coupon for $5 off when they sign up for Home Depot emails.

    • Leave your shopping cart. Shoppers can add items to their online shopping cart and then abandon the page to see if the retailer sends a discount code via email.

    • Be patient. A unique code might not hit your inbox right away. Wait 5-10 minutes to see if the code arrives.

    • Try common codes. If a store does not list a welcome discount, try common promo codes like the current quarter + the year, such as SPRING2026. Shoppers can also try JOIN10 or HELLO2026.

    Common Promo Code: Free Shipping

Most stores offer free shipping codes that go beyond SHIPFREE. In fact, free shipping deals usually require a minimum spending threshold. If you’re $5 short of the $35 free shipping threshold at Target, you don’t have to look for a code. Instead, you can add a small filler item to your cart, such as a pair of socks, to get free shipping.

Savings analyst Lia Berman reminds readers to use the CouponCabin Sidekick. “The Sidekick finds promo codes for shoppers in real time, which takes out the guesswork. When you’re shopping at a specific retailer, you’ll be able to see what coupons are available.”

    Don’t Forget About Code Stacking

Maximizing the use of promo codes includes being able to use more than one code on your purchase. At Kohl’s, shoppers can use up to four coupons on the same order. You can redeem one sitewide percent-off coupon, multiple department-specific coupons and Kohl’s Cash and Kohl’s Rewards within the same order.
