5 Ways to Cut the Cost of Kids' Holiday Gifts Before December

Holiday gift shopping gets expensive when parents chase hype deals without knowing the store rules behind them. Cut the total with tactics that actually change the math: price-match windows, rewards thresholds, holiday return dates, and promo terms that tell you what stacks and what does not.

  • 1. Take advantage of Target’s Holiday Price Match

    Skip the usual 14-day price match mindset at Target during the holiday season. From November 1 through December 24, Target offers a Holiday Price Match Guarantee that gives shoppers a much longer window for adjustments. A toy purchased in early November qualifies for a refund if the price drops for Black Friday or later in December. Rely on this extended policy instead.

    2. Build Kohl's carts around the real threshold

    Kohl's Rewards members earn 5% on every purchase. During Kohl's Cash earn periods, the order also earns an extra $10 in Kohl's Cash for every $50 spent. Build the cart around that threshold. If the order is sitting at $46, push it past $50 only when the added item is planned and the extra Kohl's Cash improves the total.

    Don’t fall for the ‘breakage trap’ with Kohl’s Cash. The reward expires and can only be used during a short promotional window.

    3. Apply the stack in the right order

    Discount math breaks when the order is wrong. A $50 gift with 10% off drops to $45. If cash back is 5% on the discounted subtotal, the return is $2.25. That puts the net cost at about $42.75 before tax. Apply the promo code first. Add cash back second. Judge the deal on the final net cost.

    4. Use Walmart's holiday return window to buy early without trapping the budget

    Most Walmart items bought from October 1 through December 31 are returnable until January 31. Use that extended window when you buy gifts early. It gives you room to fix the wrong size, the duplicate toy, or the bad pick without locking the money up for good.
